Experiment #3: Play with charcoal. You might be delighted with some of the spontaneous marks that emerge from these materials and want to repeat them. This is the birth of technique itself and can open up a world of personal expression in your work.
I had a lot of fun with the charcoal, which surprised me, because I usually prefer graphite instead. Charcoal’s so messy and smudgy, but I just let that be part of the fun. I liked the layers, flowing motions, diamonds, and Picasso-like face that emerged.
